MOUTH ULCERS (CANKER SORES):
What is Mouth Ulcer?
It is shallow lesion which is usually form in the oral cavity.i.e. inner cheeks, tongue, gum or floor of the tongue.
Classically, it is round or oval in shape with white or yellow center and red border. It may vary in sizes.
TYPES OF MOUTH ULCERS( CANKER SORES):
These ulcers are small round or oval shape with yellow or white center surrounded by red border. Their size may vary from about 2mm to 8 mm approx.
2) Major Aphthous Ulcers:
3) Herpetiform Ulcers:
These are Pin-head size erosions that amalgamate to form large, irregular looking lesions. They are painful and their occurrence rate is rare, but more persistent than Minor Aphthous Ulcers.
CAUSES:
- Injury or trauma to the oral mucosa such as accidental biting or brushing too aggressively, friction from Dental braces during Orthodontic treatment.
- Nutritional deficiencies - Vitamin B12, iron or folate.
- Stress or emotional factors.
- Consuming certain foods like acidic or spicy food, citrus fruits.
- Hormonal changes.
- Medical conditions: Inflammatory bowel disease.
SYMPTOMS:
- Pain and discomfort in the affected area.
- Inflammation of the involved tissue.
- Sensitivity to hot, spicy or acidic food.
- Difficulty while speaking, eating or drinking.
- Tingling or burning sensation.
TREATMENT:

DENTAL PROBLEMS IN DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS.

Consequently, individuals having Diabetes Mellitus might be feeling that they are not sick, it's just that their pancreas is lazy, otherwise they are healthy.
DIABETES MELLITUS AND DENTAL PROBLEMS:
What is Diabetes Mellitus (DM)?
It is a chronic condition that occurs when pancreas doesn't produce sufficient amount of Insulin (Blood glucose regulating hormone) or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. So, in uncontrolled Diabetes there is increase in blood glucose(sugar) level.i.e. hyperglycemia.
Common Symptoms(DM):
Feeling thirsty.
Increased hunger.
Frequent urination.
Loss of weight unintentionally.
Feeling tired.
Blurred vision.
DENTAL PROBLEMS RELATED WITH DIABETES MELLITUS:
1) Dry mouth (Xerostomia): Decrease in salivary production, consistency of saliva becomes more viscous.
2) Dental Caries: Due to xerostomia and elevated levels of sugar in saliva, there is increased risk of developing dental caries.
3) Bad Breath (Diabetic Breath): It is more often smells like rotten apples or pear drops.
4) Gingival and Periodontal problems: Gingivitis (gum inflammation) if remains untreated, it may progress into Periodontitis (destruction of bone and other supporting periodontal tissues)
Signs:
Gum inflammation.
Receding gums.
Painful abscess.
Teeth drifting apart.
Loose teeth.
Tooth loss.
5) Oral Thrush (Candidiasis): Fungal infection.
6) Diminished taste sensation.
7) Delayed wound healing after tooth extraction.
8) Burning mouth syndrome (a burning sensation inside the mouth due to uncontrolled blood glucose level)

Halitosis: Bad Breath

Halitosis (Bad Breath):
Halitosis, it is also referred as Bad Breath. At times, it would become an absolute discomfiting for individuals, who're actually suffering from such kind of problem.
Sudden thought of embarrassment may evoke if you're at some gathering place and your friends or relatives recognize your mouth foul odor, that would put you in the depths of despair.
Causes:
1)Food: Certain foods such as onion, garlic and spices can cause bad breath.
2)Smoking, Consuming Tobacco and Tobacco products, drinking Alcohol.
3)Dry mouth (Xerostomia).
4)Dental conditions:
a) Poor oral health care.
b) Gum and periodontal diseases (Gingivitis and Periodontitis)
c)Dental cavities.
d)Dental Tartar or Calculus.
e) Improper cleaning of dentures
f) Mouth ulcers.
g) Unhealed extraction wound site.
h) Oral cancer.
5) Medical conditions:
a) Diabetes.
b) Liver or kidney diseases.
c) Respiratory tract infections.
Treatment:
Rule out the root cause for the halitosis and accordingly treatment should be decided.
Prevention:
-Brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day
-If you consume tobacco and tobacco products, smoking or alcohol, quit it.
-Increase your daily water intake, eat clean and healthy food.
-Elevate the salivary production by sucking lemon or chewing sugar-free gums.
-Keep regular dental checkups at least twice a year.

CAUSES AND PREVENTION OF DENTAL CARIES(DENTAL CAVITIES)
WHAT IS DENTAL CARIES OR DENTAL CAVITIES?
It is an irreversible process in which demineralization of tooth structure takes place by some tooth adherent cariogenic bacteria, that metabolizes sugar to produce acid- causing dental caries/cavities.
CAUSES:
1) Poor oral hygiene habits.
2) Consuming high sugar and starch foods or drinks, constant snacking.

3) Dry mouth (Xerostomia): It can occurs due to some underlying conditions such as Sjogren's syndrome, HIV/AIDS, etc. Including patients that are on medications such as antidepressants, antihypertensives.
4) Tooth anatomy and morphology: deep pits and fissures.
5) Addiction of tobacco chewing, smoking, alcohol consumption.
6) Family history of tooth decay or caries.
7) Heartburn, a common symptom of (GERD). i.e. gastroesophageal reflux disease-Basically it is a condition in which stomach acid flows into the mouth, which further leads to enamel weakening (outer layer of tooth) known as tooth erosion. In consideration of this, more of the dentin is exposed to bacteria, thus elevating chances of dental caries/cavities.
PREVENTION:
1) Brush your teeth with fluoridated toothpaste at least for 2 mins, twice a day.
2) Floss your teeth regularly.
3) Eat clean and healthy food.
4)Increase daily water intake.
4) Limit the amount of sugary, starchy foods or drinks in between meals. Avoid constant snacking.
5) Rinse or gargle your mouth after every meal.
6) At the end of meal, prefer having a crunchy and nutritious snack such as an apple or carrot, as it will aid in scrubbing the tooth surfaces.
7) Visit your dentist regularly.
