CAUSES AND PREVENTION OF DENTAL CARIES(DENTAL CAVITIES)

WHAT IS DENTAL CARIES OR DENTAL CAVITIES?

It is an irreversible process in which demineralization of tooth structure takes place by some tooth adherent cariogenic bacteria, that metabolizes sugar to produce acid- causing dental caries/cavities.

Henceforth, in layman terms- The tooth is attacked by some bacteria that break down sugar into acid thus causing dental decay/cavities.

CAUSES:

1) Poor oral hygiene habits.

2) Consuming high sugar and starch foods or drinks, constant snacking.

3) Dry mouth (Xerostomia): It can occurs due to some underlying conditions such as Sjogren's syndrome, HIV/AIDS, etc. Including patients that are on medications such as antidepressants, antihypertensives.

4) Tooth anatomy and morphology: deep pits and fissures.

5) Addiction of tobacco chewing, smoking, alcohol consumption.

6) Family history of tooth decay or caries.

7) Heartburn, a common symptom of (GERD). i.e. gastroesophageal reflux disease-Basically it is a condition in which stomach acid flows into the mouth, which further leads to enamel weakening (outer layer of tooth) known as tooth erosion. In consideration of this, more of the dentin is exposed to bacteria, thus elevating chances of dental caries/cavities.

PREVENTION:

1) Brush your teeth with fluoridated toothpaste at least for 2 mins, twice a day.

2) Floss your teeth regularly.

3) Eat clean and healthy food.

4)Increase daily water intake.

4) Limit the amount of sugary, starchy foods or drinks in between meals. Avoid constant snacking.

5) Rinse or gargle your mouth after every meal.

6) At the end of meal, prefer having a crunchy and nutritious snack such as an apple or carrot, as it will aid in scrubbing the tooth surfaces.

7) Visit your dentist regularly.
