MOUTH ULCERS (CANKER SORES)

 Hello guys,

'YOUR DENTAL COMPADRE' is excited to spill the beans regarding today's topic. So, are you guys ready for this ride?
First things first, have you ever experienced this feeling, that you're craving to have 'Pani Puri', but you can't have it, as you're experiencing burning sensation inside your mouth.
Oh! yes, I' am putting light over this topic.i.e. Mouth Ulcers.


 MOUTH ULCERS (CANKER SORES):




What is Mouth Ulcer?

It is shallow lesion which is usually form in the oral cavity.i.e. inner cheeks, tongue, gum or floor of the tongue.

Classically, it is round or oval in shape with white or yellow center and red border. It may vary in sizes.

TYPES OF MOUTH ULCERS( CANKER SORES):

1) Minor Aphthous Ulcers:



These ulcers are small round or oval shape with yellow or white center surrounded by red border. Their size may vary from about 2mm to 8 mm approx.
Site: Inner aspect of cheeks, lips or under the tongue.
In general, they take 1 to 2 weeks for healing process, may cause minor pain and discomfort.


2) Major Aphthous Ulcers:




Major Aphthous Ulcers have less prevalence rate, they are bigger and deeper than Minor Aphthous Ulcers. These ulcers are irregular in shape with raised borders and are more deeply penetrated inside the tissue. In consideration of this, they take several weeks for healing completely. More likely to leave scar tissue on healing.
Site: Soft palate, back of the throat, or bottom of the gums.


3) Herpetiform Ulcers:




These are Pin-head size erosions that amalgamate to form large, irregular looking lesions. They are painful and their occurrence rate is rare, but more persistent than Minor Aphthous Ulcers.

CAUSES:

- Injury or trauma to the oral mucosa such as accidental biting or brushing too aggressively, friction from Dental braces during Orthodontic treatment.



- Nutritional deficiencies - Vitamin B12, iron or folate.

- Stress or emotional factors.



- Consuming certain foods like acidic or spicy food, citrus fruits.

- Hormonal changes.

- Medical conditions: Inflammatory bowel disease.



SYMPTOMS:

- Pain and discomfort in the affected area.

- Inflammation of the involved tissue.

- Sensitivity to hot, spicy or acidic food.

- Difficulty while speaking, eating or drinking.

- Tingling or burning sensation.


TREATMENT:

Consult your doctor. Treatment would be decided accordingly, depending on the severity of the disease.
